Curriculum vision  Modern Foreign Languages

At South Walney Junior School we have a clear, coherent vision for our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum.

‘Learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.’  DFE 2016

Our overarching aim for MFL through the Kapow scheme at South Walney Junior School is to:

  • to instill a love of language learning and an awareness of other cultures.
  •  to develop the confidence to communicate in French for practical purposes, using both written and spoken French.
  • to give pupils a foundation for language learning that encourages and enables them to apply their skills to learning further languages, developing a strong understanding of the English language, facilitating future study and opening opportunities to study and work in other countries in the future.

We believe we have an inspirational, ambitious and coherently planned knowledge-rich French curriculum.   Our curriculum aims to be transformative, raising MFL aspirations to see beyond our locality.  We are aware that some of our pupils have limited experience of other languages and cultures and so are passionate about expanding their knowledge and understanding using days such as European Day of Languages, Chinese New Year etc and through working with the local secondary school.  We want to deliver a curriculum that will break the cycle of disadvantage that traps some of our pupils and MFL can help them overcome adversity.

Our MFL curriculum is underpinned by our core principles, using the mnemonic SAFE:

A Supportive school

helping children to Achieve

And Flourish
