Curriculum vision  Music

At South Walney Junior School we have a clear, coherent vision for our Music curriculum.

At South Walney Junior School Music is a subject that provides all children with an opportunity to perform, compose and listen; to discover personal expressive qualities needed in the development of social skills and awareness of personal self-confidence, which are necessary in their future lives.  Music is celebrated, promoted and encouraged.  Our music curriculum aims to provide all students with a high-quality music education which engages and inspires them to develop a life-long love of music, increases their self-confidence, creativity and imagination, and provides opportunities for self-expression and a sense of personal achievement.

In line with the National Curriculum, through First Access provision, in-school performances, and external opportunities, South Walney Junior School aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • Be taught to sing, create and compose music
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated
  • To appreciate different musical genres and cultural diversity.
  • To develop a sense of musical and social occasion whether it be as part of a choir/ensemble or as a quality audience.

We believe we have an inspirational, ambitious and coherently planned knowledge-rich music curriculum.   Our curriculum aims to be transformative, raising music aspirations to see beyond what music they know and develop a diverse cultural capital, opening their eyes to a plethora of musical genres and experiences.  We are aware that some of our pupils have limited music experience and so are passionate about expanding their knowledge and understanding using trips to the theatre, ensemble visits, rock choir visits etc.  We want to deliver a curriculum that will break the cycle of disadvantage that traps some of our pupils and music can help them overcome adversity.

Our Music curriculum is underpinned by our core principles, using the mnemonic SAFE:

A Supportive school

helping children to Achieve

And Flourish

On a foundations of Excellence
