Curriculum Vision Religious Education
At South Walney Junior School we have a clear, coherent vision for our R.E curriculum.
The study of Religious Education (RE) is key to helping young people grow up in today’s multi-faith, diverse and connected world. Engaging our children with a stimulating, interesting and enjoyable RE curriculum encourages pupils to learn, enquire and evaluate what religions have to say about fundamental questions of life and aims to give pupils opportunities to develop their knowledge and understanding of religion and beliefs and to express their own enquiring, informed and reflective views about beliefs and values. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on the significance of interfaith dialogue and the important contribution religion and faith can make to combating prejudice and discrimination. They are encouraged to be tolerant and accepting towards people with different beliefs and views to their own.
With this in mind, we have established a school curriculum which will play an important role in preparing pupils for adult life, employment and lifelong learning. It assists them to flourish individually within their communities and as citizens in a diverse society and global community through:
• deepening their factual knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and beliefs so they can recognise the diversity which exists within and between communities and amongst individuals thus becoming aware of the wider world in which they live; know more, remember more and understand more.
• encouraging them to identify, investigate and respond to questions posed, and responses offered by some of the sources of wisdom found in religions and worldviews;
• enquiry into what enables different individuals and communities to live together respectfully for the wellbeing of all, thus developing tolerance and respect;
• providing the opportunity to question issues of life and living with a greater sense of purpose, helping them to consider their own beliefs, values and attitudes;
• expressing their personal reflections and critical responses to questions and teachings about identity, diversity, meaning and value, including spiritual and ethical issues.
We believe we have an inspirational, ambitious and coherently planned knowledge-rich R.E curriculum. Our curriculum aims to be transformative, raising aspirations to see beyond our locality. We are aware that some of our pupils have limited R.E experience and so are passionate about expanding their knowledge and understanding using fieldtrips and visits/visitors when we can. We want to deliver a curriculum that will break the cycle of disadvantage that traps some of our pupils and R.E can help them overcome adversity.
