Curriculum Vision Science

At South Walney Junior School we have a clear, coherent vision for our Science curriculum.

At South Walney Junior School, the study of Science supports our pupils to make sense of, be curious about and eventually contribute to the rapidly evolving world around us. Engaging our pupils with a relevant, exciting and challenging Science curriculum which inspires curiosity and is appropriate for preparing them for an adult life in an increasingly scientific and technologically progressive 21st century is essential since it:

•   Develops skills of critical thinking which means making reasoned judgements that are logical and well thought out and not merely accepting arguments and conclusions as they are presented but having a healthy, discerning and questioning attitude about new information;

• Helps them build a bank of scientific knowledge in order to: know more, remember more and understand more
• Helps to build an understanding of scientific processes and acquire practical scientific skills including the skills of investigation such as: observing, measuring, predicting, hypothesizing, experimenting, communicating, interpreting, explaining and evaluating;

•   Enables the acquisition of scientific language, vocabulary and applicable mathematical skills through recording investigations, interpreting data and reporting on outcomes;

• Helps to build Science Capital and the extent to which a student sees science as relevant to their everyday life and future through encouraging a positive attitude to Science and promoting future careers and ambitions in the field of STEM;
• Includes opportunities to build their self-confidence and resilience to enable them to work independently and social skills to work collaboratively with an open-mind to the ideas, suggestions and constructive criticism of others.

We believe we have an inspirational, ambitious and coherently planned knowledge-rich Science curriculum.   Our curriculum aims to be transformative, raising aspirations and helping our children see science beyond the local.  We are aware that a significant proportion of our pupils will work within the technology/sciene sector and we want to give them to best start to their careers, giving them the tools and skills to seek work within this area or beyond.

 We are aware that some of our pupils have limited scientific experience and so are passionate about expanding their knowledge and understanding using trips and visits/visitors when we can.  We want to deliver a curriculum that will break the cycle of disadvantage that traps some of our pupils and Science can help them overcome adversity.
