Curriculum vision  PHSE/RSE

At South Walney Junior School we have a clear, coherent vision for our PHSE/RSE curriculum.

Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives both on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks.  In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy and also how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way.  PSHE/RSE is embedded in all that we do to enable our children to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society.

At South Walney Junior School, the intent of our PSHE/RSE curriculum is to deliver a curriculum which is accessible to all, and that will maximise the outcomes for every child, so that they know more, remember more and understand more.

 Our overarching aim for PHSE and RSE (through our discreet lessons as well as a ‘wider curriculum approach’ to teaching PSHE/RSE)  at South Walney Junior School is to:

• to develop the ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up.
•  provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society, developing tolerance and understanding and challenging stereotypes.
•  Encourage our children to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.
• Become healthy and understand their changing body.

We believe we have an inspirational, ambitious and coherently planned PHSE/RSE curriculum.   Our curriculum aims to be transformative, raising aspirations and helping our children become positive citizens.  We are aware that some of our pupils have limited experiences, may struggle with their mental or physical health and so are passionate about expanding their knowledge and understanding using visits and visitors.  We want to deliver a curriculum that will break the cycle of disadvantage that traps some of our pupils and PSHE and RSE has a key part to play in this.

Our PHSE/RSE curriculum is underpinned by our core principles, using the mnemonic SAFE:

This policy outlines our school’s commitment to provide effective Relationships and Sex Education R(S)E and PHSE for all pupils.  It has been written with regard to the Department of Education’s Guidance 2019 and other relevant guidance and statutory requirements.  The RSE and PHSE teaching in this school contributes to our statutory duty to safeguard children and prepare them for the responsibilities and experiences of adult life.  RSE and PHSE is taught in an age-appropriate manner throughout the school.
